Governance

The Institute for AI Policy and Strategy (IAPS) is an initiative of the California-based 501(c)(3) think tank Rethink Priorities (RP). As such, IAPS receives fiscal support from RP as well as operational support from RP’s Operations Department, while IAPS sets its own research agenda. IAPS is subject to Rethink Priorities’ Transparency Policy and is accountable to Rethink Priorities’ Board of Directors.

Intellectual independence and funding

Intellectual independence is one of our core values. Achieving IAPS’ mission requires collaboration. IAPS engages with a diverse ecosystem of stakeholders—think tanks, foundations, universities, nonprofits, corporations, and government officials—who share our commitment to securing benefits and managing risks from advanced AI. IAPS’s work is primarily funded by a mix of philanthropic grants and individual gifts—including support to date from Open Philanthropy, the Survival and Flourishing Fund, allied government, and individual donors

In all cases, IAPS adheres to core principles of nonpartisanship and intellectual independence. Editorial control rests with our team. IAPS staff, fellows, and directors set research agendas, choose methodologies, and decide how findings are communicated. Publications and events reflect the authors’ analyses and should not be interpreted as positions of IAPS, our donors, partners, or any government.

IAPS is nonpartisan. We do not lobby or advocate on behalf of any donor or client, and we conduct any permissible policy advocacy strictly within the limits applicable to U.S. 501(c)(3) public charities and all other federal laws.
